The mum lady

She was wearing a spotless blazer and an uncreased white silk blouse.⠀⠀
Her straightened hair blew in the wind almost in sync with the split at the back of her pencil shirt.⠀⠀
She held with her left hand to her chest her laptop bag and on her right arm her discreet leather handbag.
Her heels were high but that didn’t stop her. ⠀⠀
She walked with purpose.⠀⠀
She had to somewhere to be.⠀⠀
She was in a rush.⠀⠀
She may have been late, or she may have been early. I’m not sure which but either could have been likely.⠀⠀

As she moved past, she stopped at the lights and looked at her phone with her spare hand. ⠀⠀
She may have been checking emails, she may have been organising a wine and cheese night with the girls. I’m not sure which but either could have been likely. ⠀⠀

When the lights went green she answered her phone and talked as she walked.⠀⠀
She may have been on a conference call, she may have been talking to her new boyfriend.⠀⠀
I’m not sure which but either could have been likely. ⠀⠀

For a moment I couldn’t hear the little noises from the backseat or the wiggles audio playing on through the stereo. I was just reminiscing on my life before becoming a mum.⠀⠀
I used to be her, the busy business lady.⠀⠀
I’m not that lady anymore. While she’s still part of me and may one day make a return, right now she is not what I see in the reflection.⠀⠀
I’m the new lady, the mum lady.⠀

I’m the lady who is rushing after a toddler, not after work deadlines.⠀⠀
I’m the lady in the jeans, stained tops and flat shoes.⠀⠀
I’m the lady with the messy mum bun and kinked hair.⠀⠀
I’m the lady with a bursting baby bag on my left arm, and a toddler on my right. ⠀⠀
I rarely have hands free time to check my phone and when I do it’s often to scroll mindlessly on social media rather than check work emails. ⠀⠀
I answer/make phone calls when I can but the majority are either SOS dad calls or to organise play dates and swimming lessons.⠀⠀
I’m always late and never early.⠀⠀
I still walk with purpose but the purpose is for my daughter. ⠀⠀
I still always have somewhere to be, but that place is for my daughter. ⠀⠀

I’m that lady right now and I’m proud to be her. I’m sure about that.
