Know our worth
As you sit in a messy room late at night
You are tired and can’t be bothered
You think about all you’ve done that day
There is still a lot to be conquered.
You have played with play dough
You have taught your child how to bake
You have done some cleaning
But there is still much to do and it’s late.
Your husband got home from work early
He did give you a break for a while
You took the opportunity to cook tea and sort lunches
Before attacking more of the washing pile.
You then sat down to have dinner as a family
“This is delicious” your husband did say
But by this time you were too tired to converse
It was the first time that you sat down all day.
Dinner was short lived as per usual
Your child didn’t like what you made
You the left your husband and tended to the routine
Your own dinner time was of course delayed.
You gave your child a bath and got her changed
You tried to settle her down with a book
Meanwhile you left your husband to relax in peace
Once again letting him off the hook.
You guilt tripped yourself as per usual
He has been at work all day you would say
It’s only fair that he has a break for tomorrow
After all, he is the one bringing in the pay.
You continue doing the all of the unpaid work
Even when he offers you religiously decline
You feel it’s only fair as you don’t value your worth
t’s ok you think, I’ll be fine.
Eventually you get burnt out and tell him
You can’t do everything all the time
You agree it’s only fair you both share the load
Remembering nothing you do as mum earns a dime.
The work we do as mums is relentless
We know that much is true
It’s 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
There are forever more things to do.
Even though we don’t get any financial reward
We should not be valued any less
We are doing the hardest job on the planet after all
We are mothering without rest.
It’s so important that we remember this
That we don’t decline offers for support
We are doing an invaluable job everyone knows it
Realistically any salary would fall short.
We are unpaid working mothers
We do the most important job on earth
It’s easy to forget but we mustn’t
It’s essential that we know our worth.
