Firsts and lasts
I see you Mama,
Baby in your arms
Dishes in the sink
Waiting for a moment
To get up and have a drink
⠀
Washing piles around you
Your phone is close by too
The TV’s been on for hours
Yet everything feels new
⠀
Still in the padding
Clipped bras on rotate
Moving still hurts a little
Under that soft extra weight
⠀
Swallowing your tired
Trying to offer your best
As visitors keep calling in
When all you want is rest
⠀
Adding to your lists
Seeing what’s to be done
Forgetting that right now
You’re someone’s number one
⠀
Up late in darkness
Down for a short time
Running on empty
With no space to unwind
⠀
Wearing your new skin
Covering up the marks
It’s easy to forget
That you are pure art
⠀
You are always needed
It’s easy to feel touched out
You watch time move slowly
Your needs going without
⠀
Your mind is always on
Juggling other’s needs
Appointments, laundry, love
Hungry mouths you need to feed
It’s just so relentless
You rarely get a break
I know your body feels
That tired, full ache
⠀
But this won’t be forever
This stage shall soon pass
And one day you’ll miss
These special firsts and lasts.
